A day of workshops - letter press & 3D
I booked onto a main workshop induction for the 3D workshop, in order to be able to construct a deckle for a much better size/shape of paper and then got a refresher in letter press this morning as well!
Nothing special, just briefly used each machine to know how they work and how to use them safely. Rather terrifying but not overly complicated.
Playing around with type layout on the small surface area, using wooden type due to the heavily textured paper.
I went with 'eco world' in the end - quite fitting and used a good amount of the space. The imprint left on the paper after pressing it was really interesting as well, rather nice as a physical element.
The colours I used were a bit bright but there was certainly no issue with the ink taking to the paper, at all which is really exciting! It is definitely a printing method that could work for the text element and with this paper being the thickest one I used here, it is a positive sign.
I printed on a thinner piece of paper here, with less ink and applied in a bit more of an interesting way. Other than there not being so much of an indent on the paper, there isn't much of a difference in terms of how the ink applies to the paper, which is positive. I also really like the effect of the colour done this way, it's really intriguing and almost has a decomposing feel to it.
Playing around with different layouts to see what kind of visuals can be created, to a larger scale.
I played around with the application of the ink even more here and it really works! It just has such an intriguing effect that makes you look closer and I love the fact that each letter is unique. Whilst I didn't make this paper and it isn't as textured as mine, it is still an entirely different texture to standard paper and I was curious to see how it would print and it printed really well, as with the other two. I think this paper is more of a cotton based structure than purely paper which mine is but I don't think that should matter all toooo much.
So, that was a really successful and helpful printing refresher and super useful to know just how well the paper takes to the ink! I think this is definitely evidence that this paper could work, I just need to experiment further with it.
