London science museum

Over the Christmas break, I went to the science museum in London which I thought would link in well with my project. It’s safe to say it’s changed a lot since I was last there and is not so much an interactive place anymore rather like any other museum with a few added interactions - the interactive parts are no longer free and have to be booked in advance so I didn’t see any of that. There was an interesting section about constructing your own future, with a few interactive technologies which weren’t overly relevant but were certainly engaging for the younger audiences:

Yeah, so not overly relevant per say but due to the fact that it is digital, it certainly drew in quite an audience from the younger ages but they were quite complicated to actually understand and use, which is potentially actually what made it all the more captivating - trying to work it out. A challenge is a good form of education, as opposed to an easy ‘walk in the park’ that’s finished with in 5 minutes. I kind of like the idea though of creating your own world, perhaps your own ‘perfect world’ and what that might mean/look like, from an environmental perspective. That could actually be an interesting plot for the game aspect, I would just need to figure out how to go about that…

The gift shop (everyone’s favourite part) was more useful, in terms of inspiration - even more children’s books & a game:

Love this book! I think I will definitely come back to this book a little later down the line when I have better idea of what I want to do with the book/project because I really like the structure of the book in terms of process of learning/explaining what plastic is, why we use it and how we can reduce our usage of it.

Pretty intelligent as a game idea - making something quite dull and boring and turning it into a game which can easily relate to real life. Definitely something to think about.

Not relevant to the environment but is another example of a ‘starting point’ educational activity book with really nice illustrations and overall finish.

A book about seasons, which I am still considering doing my book on and it has a light touch of education as well so I thought it might help a little later down the line again. Due to the nature of the book, it’s certainly interactive and acts almost like an ornament and so will act as a reminder as to the content of the book - the beauty of the world.

From the research that I have done on children’s books & games, the idea of creating a book that looks like a version of homework but that is fun and pressure free has definitely emerged and an idea that I quite like because what I am trying to do is educate the reader but in a way that isn’t boring and just feels like a lecture, I’m trying to engage the reader and inspire them! Give them the ‘starting point’ to then take it their own direction.
